The Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) is a government agency of Nigeria which operates prisons. The agency is headquartered in Abuja, and it is under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior and the Civil Defence Immigration and Prisons Board.

The Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board (CDFIPB) is now accepting applications from eligible Nigerians for full time appointments into the Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS).

Duties Of A Prison Officer, Roles And Responsibilities

The Prisons Service is a government agency which operates prisons. and it is under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior and the Civil Defence Immigration and Prisons Board.

A prison officer has responsibility for the security, supervision, training and rehabilitation of people committed to prison by the courts. This includes motivating prisoners to do what is best for themselves and others around them within a safe and healthy environment.

In addition to their custodial duties, prison officers must be able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with prisoners, balancing authority with a large amount of understanding and compassion, in order to effect rehabilitation.

The nature of the role demands the ability to think on your feet, make quick decisions and deal effectively with unexpected situations.


Duties Of A Prison Officer

  1. assisting in prisoner reviews;
  2. being aware of prisoners’ rights and dignity and their personal responsibility;
  3. providing appropriate care and support for vulnerable prisoners and those at risk of self-harm;
  4. performing security checks and search procedures;
  5. taking an active part in rehabilitation programmes, including workshops;
  6. supervising visits and carrying out patrol duties;
  7. escorting prisoners;
  8. supervising prisoners, keeping an account of those in your charge and maintaining proper order;
  9. advising and counselling prisoners and making sure they have access to professional help if needed;
  10. employing authorised physical control and restraint procedures where appropriate;
  11. promoting anti-bullying and suicide prevention policies;
  12. assessing and advising prisoners;
  13. liaising with other specialist staff, including health and social work professionals;
  14. writing prisoner reports.
  15. taking care of prisoners’ property;
Higher grade prison officers have extra responsibilities, such as supervising other officers or looking after an area or wing of the prison.

According to a post on the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) website, the recruitment exercise will run from April 30 and end on June 11.



Nigerian Prisons Service Recruitment Available Positions & Requirements.

CATEGORY A: Superintendent Cadre:
  1. Superintendent of Prisons (SP) Medical, CONMESS 02.
  • Applicants must be holders of M.B.B.S; M.D; M.D.S; or equivalents from recognized universities.
2. Superintendent of Prisons (SP) Vetinary CONMESS 02.
  • Applicants must be holders of D.V.M from recognized universities.
3. Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) Pharmacy, CONHESS 09.
  • Applicants must possess Bachelor’s of Pharmacy degrees from recognized universities.
4. Assistant Superintendent of Prisons. I (ASP.I) CONPASS 09
  • Applicants must be holders of master’s degree from recognized Universities in the following areas: Humanities, Social Sciences, Lab. Sciences, Architecture, Engineering, Radiology, etc
5. Assistant Superintendent of Prisons II (ASP.II), CONPASS 08
  • Applicants must be holders of first degree from recognized Universities in the following areas: Humanities, Social Sciences, Psychology, Estate/Town Planning, Public Health, Food Sciences, Social Works, etc.

CATEGORY B: Inspectorate Cadre:

1. Senior Inspector of Prisons (SIP), CONPASS 08.
  • Applicants must be holders of HND certificates obtained from recognized Polytechnics/Colleges in the following areas: Estate Management, Town Planning, Public Health, Food Sciences, Social Works, etc.
2. Inspector of Prisons (IP) Nursing, CONHESS 06.
  • Applicants must be Registered Nurses (RN), Registered Midwives (RM) or Registered Nurses/Midwives (RNM) obtained from recognized institutions
3. Assistant Inspector of Prisons (AIP) CONPASS 06.
  • Applicants must be holders of OND/NCE Obtained from recognized institutions.

CATEGORY C: Assistant Cadre:

1. Prisons Assistant I (PAI) CONPASS 05
  • Applicants must be holders of GCE Ordinary Level, SSCE/NECO or their equivalents with a minimum of Five (5) credits in not more than two (2) sittings, which should include English and Mathematics or Trade Test Grade 1 (Artisans, Motor drivers, Mechanics, Auto Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Masons, etc.) NPS
2. Prisons Assistant II (PAII) CONPASS 04
  • Applicants must possess the GCE Ordinary Level, SSCE/NECO or its equivalent with a minimum of five (5) credits in not more than two (2) sittings, which should include English or Trade Test Grade II. (Artisans, Motor drivers, Mechanics, Auto Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Masons, etc.)
3. Prison Assistant III (PA.III) CONPASS 03.
  • Applicants must be holders of GCE Ordinary Level, SSCE/NECO or its equivalents with a minimum of three (3) credits in not more than Two (2) sittings, which should include at least English or Mathematics or Trade Test Grade III. (Artisans, Motor drivers, Mechanics, Auto Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Masons, etc.).

General Requirements for Nigerian Prison Service Intake.
  1. Applicants must be Nigerians by birth.
  2. Applicants must possess the requisite qualification and certificates. Any certificate or qualification not presented and accepted at the recruitment centre shall not be accepted after the recruitment.
  3. Applicants must be fit and present certificates of medical fitness from Government recognized Hospitals.
  4. Applicants must be of good characters, and must not have been convicted of any criminal offences.
  5. Applicants must not be members of any Secret Society, Cults or Drug Addicts etc.
  6. Applicants must not be financially embarrassed.
  7. Applicants must be between ages of 18 and 30 years
  8. Applicants heights must not be less than 1.65m for males and 1.60 for females.
  9. Applicants chest measurement must not be less than 0.87 for men.
  10. Computer literacy will be of added advantage.

  4. Candidates are advised to print out the Referee forms which must be duly completed for submission during screening.
